Bud Abbott turns 93 years young, January 15, 2014

Synopsis of Bud's Navy career:  In England 1940, volunteered for Royal Navy and was selected to train as pilot in the Royal Naval Air Service (aka Fleet Air Arm). That proved to be a big, expensive mistake.  Started training March 1941 and was finally discharged February 1948; I had signed on for extra service when the war ended (I was in Ceylon).  Flew a dozen different types of aircraft, mostly from land bases, training, ferrying, for fun and in operations, using 5 or 6 different aircraft carriers,  mostly in and around Britain, Atlantic & North Sea. Operational aircraft were older bi-planes (Swordfish & Albacore) and a new one, the Barracuda.  All were 3 seat torpedo/bomber/reconnaissance planes.  No fighters!  Had 5 or 6 " incidents" in which my plane was damaged, sometimes my fault; at least 2 were total losses. Some of my colleagues suspected that I was working for the enemy.  Landing & taking off from carriers is interesting, even tricky, and  the catapult gives you quite a kick but the flying is generally just boring.
